    Südlich der Piazza dei Priori befindet sich die Piazza San Giovanni, das religiöse Zentrum von Volterra. Die Krönung des Platzes ist der Duomo aus dem 12. Jahrhundert mit seiner pisanisch-romanischen Fassade. Der Dom, offiziell als Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta bekannt, ist derzeit wegen Restaurierung geschlossen, voraussichtlich bis September 2019. Im Inneren stellen die beeindruckende Kassettendecke und eine Sammlung von Kunstwerken vom Mittelalter bis zur Renaissance den Höhepunkt dar. Die Skulptur der Deposition ist eine äußerst seltene romanische Holzschnitzerei, einfach in der Ausführung, aber voller Pathos und Dramatik. Der Duomo, der im 16. Jahrhundert umgebaut wurde, sollte bald wieder in seinem alten Glanz erstrahlen.

    Gegenüber der Kathedrale steht das achteckige Baptisterium, das angeblich an der Stelle eines heidnischen Tempels errichtet wurde. Das schwarz-weiß gestreifte Baptisterium zeichnet sich durch sein wunderschönes Marmortor und sein feines Taufbecken aus, das 1505 von Sansovino geschaffen wurde.
