Borgo San Lorenzo

Borgo San Lorenzo liegt nahe des Apeninn, etwa 30 km von Florenz entfernt, im Gebiet des Mugello, das mit der Geschichte der Medici eng verknüpft ist.

Geschichte
Wo Sie heute Borgo San Lorenzo finden, war früher die römische Gemeinde Anneianum. Nach dem Rückzug der Römer benannten die Einwohner ihren Ort nach der Kirche San Lorenzo und dieser Name ist bis heute erhalten geblieben.
Im 13. Jh. spielte Borgo San Lorenzo eine bedeutende Rolle bei den Verhandlungen zwischen den Anhängern des Kaiserreichs – den Ghibellinen – und den Anhängern des Papstes – den Guelphs. Am Ende dieses Jahrhunderts kam die Stadt unter die Kontrolle der Republik Florenz.
Zur Verteidigung der Stadt verstärkte und errichtete die Republik Florenz 4 Stadttore. Zwei dieser Stadttore sind noch heute zu sehen: die Porta Fiorentina (Florentiner Tor) und die Porta dell’Orologio (Uhrentor).
Die Befestigungsanlagen schützten die Stadt durch all die Jahrhunderte, auch beim Angriff der Franzosen im Jahr 1527. Leider wurde während des 2. Weltkrieges einiges zerstört.
